A federal grand jury has returned an indictment charging New Haven resident Abdurrahman Akhdar, 26, with one count of possession of a stolen firearm dating back to an incident in 2015.
The indictment alleges that on Nov. 30, 2015, Akhdar illegally possessed, stored and disposed of a Smith & Wesson .380 caliber pistol and a Colt .45 caliber pistol, both of which had traveled in interstate commerce. The indictment further alleges that Akhdar knew or had reason to believe the firearms were stolen.
U.S. Attorney John Durham said the indictment was returned to a judge in New Haven federal court on Feb. 20. On Wednesday, Akhdar pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Akhdar is currently detained pending trial as he is currently serving a state prison sentence for an unrelated offense. If he is convicted of the new weapons charge, he will face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
